Building energy modeling is a sophisticated procedure to simulate the actual operation of a building, whether new or existing construction. The modeling precisely predicts the building’s energy consumption and performance with quantifiable modeling results. This can assist the architect, the mechanical engineer, and the electrical engineer smoothen the project design process, keep the designs on track, and save time and money with fewer design changes. Energy modeling can not only enhance the building energy performance, but also maximize occupant thermal comfort with more accurate Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment sizing.
Energy modeling is an efficient way to balance the energy cost to the upfront construction cost through comparing scenarios of different building materials or different mechanical or electrical systems. This allows the design team and the owner to make informed decisions based on quantifiable results while maintaining code compliance.
Energy modeling has been largely used for code and regulation compliance for obtaining building permits. It is also a critical component of sustainable building design practice. Energy modelling allows for improved insight into carbon and greenhouse gas emissions. This insight may used in the pursuit of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification of buildings, Passive House Building Certification, and net zero building design.
